A Black mother, identified as Ajike “AJ” Owens was fatally shot and killed by her neighbor, Susan Lorincz, after she confronted her over a dispute with her children.
Owens had knocked on a Lorincz’s door and demanded she come out of her apartment after the 58-year-old white woman yelled at her children and threw a roller skate at her 9-year-old son, hitting him.
According to police report, the skate hit Owen’s child on the toe. When the boy and his 12-year-old brother went to speak with Lorincz, she opened her door and swung at them with an umbrella. The report says the sons reported what happened to their mother.
Owens had reportedly gone to Lorincz’s home, knocked on her door multiple times and demanded she come out. Lorincz fired at Owens through the door, hitting her on the upper chest.
Lorincz has been arrested and charged with manslaughter with a firearm, culpable negligence, battery and two counts of assault, said the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. Lorincz will appear in court virtually.
Owen’s son who witnessed the shooting, blames himself for reporting the incident to his mom. Speaking to reporters, Owen’s mother Pamela Dais recalled the boy saying “Grandma, grandma. I couldn’t save her.” Dais said “he witnessed his mother shot and killed. In soul, and his heart, his baby sister, and his baby brother, as well as himself, will never see their mother again.”
Report says Owen’s family accused Lorincz of yelling at Owen’s children and calling them racial slur prior to the shooting.
