Millions of people across North America will reportedly witness a total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024. The total eclipse which will be visible in parts of Mexico, United States and Canada.
The total eclipse, which occurs when the moon completely blocks out the sun, will darken skies for a few minutes as if it were dawn or dusk, explains US’s NASA space agency.
The total eclipse will first appear along Mexico’s Pacific Coast at around 11:07 am PDT, then travel across a strip of the U.S., from Texas to Maine, and into Canada. About 31.6 million people live in the path of totality, the path where the moon will fully block out the sun, says NASA.
The path will range between 108 and 122 miles wide. The path of totality according to NASA, includes Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.
Some parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the eclipse. If the weather permits, some major cities will be able to view the eclipse. “Weather permitting, people along the path of totality will see the sun’s corona, or outer atmosphere, which is usually obscured by the bright face of the sun”, NASA says on its website.
The eclipse’s moment of totality will only last a few minutes, however, the exact time of visibility depends on where you are within its path of totality.
During the eclipse, researchers hope to learn when the moon passes directly in front of the sun, the utmost edge of the Sun’s atmosphere, or Corona, is seen “in a very special way”, according to NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy.
“Things are happening with the corona that we don’t fully understand”, Melroy said at a press briefing. “The chance we are going to see something amazing is very high.”
NASA’s three sounding rockets will reportedly be launched from Virginia before, during and immediately after the eclipse.”
