China has started three days of military exercises around Taiwan after Taiwan’s president Tsai Ing-Wen’s meeting with the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy.
China views Taiwan as its own territory and has not ruled out using force to bring it under its control, reports CNN. The operation called “United Sharp Sword”, is a “stern warning” to Taiwan government.
According to the announcement made by the Chinese Military’s Eastern Theater Command on Saturday, the operation is a “necessary move to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
“The task force simultaneously organized patrols around the Island to create an all-round encirclement and deterrent situation”, said the Eastern Theater Command in CNN report. The Taiwanese Defense Ministry said it detected a total of 42 Chinese warplanes over the Taiwan Strait, which separates the Island from the Chinese mainland.
Also, 29 Chinese warplanes were detected at the median line having crossed into its air defense identification zone. Eight PLA vessels had also been spotted in the strait. The ministry said it was closely monitoring the situation and would respond appropriately to defend Taiwan.
The ministry said it would respond to the drills with a “calm, rational and serious attitude, and will stand guard and monitor in accordance with the principles of ‘not escalating nor disputes’ to defend national sovereignty and national security.”
