Canada has announced its plan to send military helicopters to Eastern Europe in 2024. Defense Minister Bill Blair and Chief of the defense staff General Wayne Eyre made this known during a visit to Latvia on Friday, December 15.
The deployment will begin in 2024 and will reportedly include four multi-role Griffon helicopters, and an undisclosed amount of Chinook transport choppers in 2025. Canada has already announced that it will double its troops in Latvia to support NATO’s military efforts.
The troops will be doubling from about 1,000 who are currently present to 2,200 troops by 2026 and will contribute a squadron of 15 Leopard 2 ranks plus associated personnel.
When speaking from the Latvian capital on Dec. 15, Blair said the additional measures will “significantly increase the capabilities of the Canadian-led, multinational battle group in Latvia, further boosting NATO’s defense and deterrence posture.”
“This is the first time that Canada has persistently deployed tactical aviation capabilities to Europe since operations in Bosnia and Kosovo in the late 1990s and early 2000s”, said the defense ministry in a statement.
