Calgary’s much anticipated new Blue Sky City Logo was revealed on Wednesday by Calgary Economic Development (CED) and Tourism Calgary.

The logo was reportedly inspired by beadwork which “captures Calgary’s story as a place of confluence where peoples, lands, cultures and ideas come together.” The beadwork symbolizes the story of each individual Calgarian, and when these stories and individuals come together, the sum of their parts is greater than the whole.

The new logo is a large C, formed by bead-like circles shaped like the sun. The logo comes in three colors, Sky Blue, Western Red and Sunshine Yellow. According to the city, the Sky Blue symbolizes “Blue Sky Thinking”, the Sunshine Yellow “Highlights our Endless Optimism” and the Western Red is “A Tribute to our City’s Heritage.”

The Slogan “Blue Sky City”, “inspires, connects and call for a deeper understanding of our past and our future.” The city said “We believe that clarifying who we are and what we stand for as a city will do many things, but most importantly, create greater cohesion between Calgarians and align us around a vision for a shared future.”

The slogan also referred to the fact that Calgary is one of the sunniest cities in Canada, with an average of 330 days of sun each year.

“We’ve tapped into our historical look, especially around beadwork. Beadwork has been used for centuries to talk about stories, making stories”, said Brad Perry, President and CEO of the CED.

“For us, that was really important to build that sense of understanding. But what the possibilities are when you combine these colors to make something new and exciting,” Perry added.
