The water restrictions in Calgary could reportedly last for three to five weeks more, after a scan of a broken water main revealed more issues that need repair.

According to city officials, five more locations require repair along a water feeder main that supplies drinking water to over half of Calgary.

The Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) Chief, Susan Henry said, “the pipe is not safe to bring into service without these repairs. Our only choice is to stay the course with our current water restrictions for three to five weeks further.”

“We have begun preparations to bring in as many redundant parts and to put personnel and equipment on standby to make sure that we’re in a position to address any issues quickly and keep the water supply that we have currently, she said during a press conference on Friday afternoon.

The additional breaks were reportedly detected by a robot sent into the pipe, which scanned over four kilometers of the feeder main. “Our experts say this is the most dramatic and traumatic break of the feeder main they have ever seen”, said Henry.

Calgary’s Capital Priorities and Investments director Francois Bouchart said, “we have discovered five hotspots where significant wire breakage has occurred and require critical and urgent repair.”

He added, “If we were to complete current repairs and restore the water feeder main now, it would be at high risk of additional catastrophic breaks.”

The crew is now working on checking whether there is additional damage to the feeder main. The water restrictions are expected to last into July.
