The number of lab-confirmed cases of E. coli connected to the outbreak at Calgary daycares have now increased to 128, says Alberta Health Services (AHS).

More kids are being hospitalized due to the outbreak. As of Thursday morning, there were 25 children in the hospital, with 20 in at Alberta’s Children Hospital and five in the pediatric unit of the Peter Lougheed Centre. Three Kids have reportedly been discharged so far.

Of the hospitalized children, nine have been confirmed by AHS as having Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), a condition that affects the kidneys and causes blood clots. The health authority says all of the patients are stable and receiving care in hospital.

AHS says it has established a dedicated clinic at Alberta Children’s Hospital to monitor patients after their visit to the emergency department, as well as patients that have been discharged. Children are doing daily bloodwork to monitor for signs of complications and HUS.
