Alberta Health Services (AHS) has declared an E. coli (Escherichia Coli) outbreak at six Calgary daycares and five other sites that share a central kitchen.

In a statement released on Monday, AHS says there are 17 lab-confirmed cases linked to the outbreak, 12 people have been hospitalized and up to 50 children visited a hospital because of the outbreak.

According to AHS, the outbreak is believed to have originated at a central kitchen that is shared by six locations of Fueling Brains, a day care that operated multiple location in Calgary, as well as five other locations.

The authority says these locations have had a closure order until the issue is resolved.  They are Fueling Brains Braeside; Fueling Brains West 85th; Fueling Brains Centennial; Fueling Brains Bridgeland; Fueling Brains McKnight; Braineer Academy; Kidz Space; Little Oak Early Education (formerly Mangrove); Almond Branch School and Vik Academy in Okotoks.

Reports by Global News says families of the children attending the locations have been sent letters warning them of the outbreak.

AHS warns that children may experience nausea, vomiting, headache, mild fever, severe stomach cramps and watery or bloody diarrhea. The infection is diagnosed through a laboratory test of a stool sample and is often caused by E. coli bacteria. The symptoms may appear within 1 to 10 days of exposure to the bacteria, and most symptoms end within 5 to 10 days, says AHS.
