British-French singer and actress, Jane Birkin died on Sunday in Paris. She was 76.

Birkin, had reportedly been suffering from health problems in recent years that had forced her to cancel concerts. Her death was confirmed by French President Emmanuel Macron, who described her as “a French icon” in a Twitter message.

The French media reports that the style icon was found dead at her home. The cause of death and other details were not immediately known. President Macron led the tribute to Birkin, hailing her as a “complete artist”.

“Jane Birkin was a French icon because she was the incarnation of freedom, sang the most beautiful words of our language,” he tweeted. French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne praised her as an “unforgettable icon, a unique voice, and charm who with her music and her talent transcended generations.”

Birkin attained international fame and notability for her decade-long musical and romantic partnership with Serge Gainsbourg. She had most of her acting career in France and occasionally appeared in English-language films such as Death on the Nile (1978) and Evil Under the Sun (1982).

Birkin was the inspiration behind the luxury Birkin bag, which was created in 1984 in her honor. The Birkin bag is one of the world’s most exclusive luxury item.
