A Calgary woman who brutally tortured nine cats has been sentenced to more than five years behind bars.
Aleeta Raugust, 26, pleaded guilty to nine counts of animal cruelty. She admitted to adopting and then torturing the cats, killing at least seven of them.
According to Global News, Raugust’s sentence sets a “benchmark for the longest animal abuse sentence in Canadian history, eclipsing the previous mark of three years.”
During the sentencing submissions heard on Thursday, the Crown was seeking a sentence of eight to ten years in prison, but Raugust was sentenced to six and a half. However, with already served, this means she will spend close to five and a half years in custody.
In her psychological assessment, it was reported that Raugust took videos of the “two or three” cat tortures, repeatedly watching them for her pleasure before deleting them. She also left some of the bodies of the cats in public places and watched the reactions of those who discovered them, reports Global News.
