United Conservative Party members are set to debate a policy resolution requiring parental consent whenever a student under 16 wants to change their name or pronouns at school.
According to Global News, that’s one of 30 policy proposals put forward for the upcoming UCP Annual General Meeting on Nov. 3 and 4 in Calgary. The policy is reportedly proposed by the UCP constituency in Edmonton-West Henday.
The same policy is already implemented in Saskatchewan and New Brunswick, where it is stated that since parent’s permission is required for field trip, “it’s unclear why schools should not require parental consent for identification changes.”
“Schools should not be in the business of going behind parents’ backs.”
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, said she “supports the grassroots process”, when asked about the policy in an unrelated news conference on Friday. Smith suggested that her government will have to “confer with stakeholders, and also Albertans.”
She said “I want to see how the debate goes, and then we’ll make some decisions once we see whether or not (the resolution) passes.”
Other proposals up for discussion at the AGM seeks to eliminate all diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) offices at post-secondary institutions for penalty of losing government funding.
The upcoming AGM will be held at the BMO Centre at Stampede Park. The party says 3,175 members have signed up to attend so far.
