Alberta Premier Danielle Smith Receives 91.5% Support in UCP Leadership Review

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith received 91.5% support for her leadership from members of the United Conservative Party in a review on Saturday.

“I’m truly humbled and honored by the overwhelming support of our party members in my leadership”, Smith said as thousands cheered and gave her a standing ovation. “I want to thank all of you for everything that you’ve done to grow our movement and to make it stronger.”

“Our party is more united than it has ever been”, she added.

Around 6,000 members signed up for the meeting, and the party said 4, 663 members vote to approve Smith. Although there is no mandated minimum level needed in the vote, Smith had said earlier on Saturday that she hoped to beat 54%.

During her keynote address on Saturday, Smith said it was important that the party remains united to fend off challenges. She said, “We are on the right path, and we’ve only just begun. So let us remain united as a party and as a movement, but let us not sink to the level of our opponents by attacking and vilifying one another, or breaking into factions.”

“Our opponents, whether that be in the NDP in Alberta, or the Liberals in Ottawa, have no chance to defeat us when we as a party are strong, unified and boldly governing our province.”

Smith also promised to protect the rights and freedom of Albertans. “Together, we will vigorously prtect the rights and freedoms of Albertans and Alberta parents and children. Together we will build health and education systems that are among the best in the world.”
