Premier Danielle Smith has outlined some details from her campaign promises to reform Alberta Health Services (AHS).

Speaking at the UCP annual general meeting on Saturday, Premier Smith told the party members congregated at the BMO Centre in Calgary, on Saturday, that in the coming weeks her government will be implementing health reforms that will decentralize AHS decision-making and resources.

Speaking to reporters, she said “Alberta Health Services is going to continue operating our acute care facilities and we are going to ask them to do a better job at it. We are going to ask them to make sure they are optimizing the use of each facility. That they’ve got the right patients in the right place receiving the right treatment.”

“We’re not going back to the era of individual hospital boards that aren’t in an integrated network, but we’re going back to more local control, more zonal control, and then keeping the things that work in the central health region, keeping them at a central level”, said Smith.

Smith said the reform process could take between 18 months to two years. She referred to the reform as “disaggregating AHS.”

She added that Albertans will continue to see “a little bit more of the things they’ve already seen.” Citing an example of the disaggregation of the mental health and addiction to a separate ministry. “It is a separate authority”, she said of the mental health ministry.
