Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services says there have been reports of a black bear making its way around Northwest Calgary.

According to reports by CBC, the government agency started receiving reports that the animal was seen in that quadrant of the city on Aug. 30, but did not hear anything else about it for almost a week.

However, officers got reports on Thursday of a bear spotted in the neighborhood of Hawkwood, around Hawkwood Boulevard and John Laurie Boulevard, that they think is the same bear that was initially reported.

“Officers are tracking it closely before they attempt to immobilize and relocate the bear to a safer or more suitable area, away from potential conflicts with humans,” said Alberta Fish and Wildlife in CBC reports.

The report says bear sightings are common in this time of year, as they move into a state of increased eating to fatten up for winter.

Alberta Fish and Wildlife advised that residents should properly store garbage as this is the most common cause of human-bear conflicts. “Storing garbage out of the reach of bears can prevent them from returning to your home, ranch or camp in search of food”, said Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services.
