RCMP have arrested and charged a 47-year-old man in Cochrane with human trafficking and other offences after a victim came forward earlier this year.

In February 2024, Cochrane RCMP launched an investigation after a woman came forward claiming to be victim of human and sex trafficking .

According to RCMP Sgt. Matt Pumphrey the woman claimed she met the man online in 2004 “after a brief consensual relationship the male began to traffic her online for monetary gain.” He reportedly trafficked her online until 2007.

“The male exploited nude photos of the victim, placing them on an interest site where other males would then contact the site to arrange for sexual services.”

The male would drive the victim to arranged locations, where he would wait to collect money, then drive to other appointments in the Cochrane and Calgary area, said RCMP.

Following an investigation, officers were able to identify other women who also gave similar statements about the man, said Pumphrey.

As a result, Darren Routhier, 47, of Cochrane has been charged with human trafficking, receiving financial benefits from the trafficking of a person, sexual assault causing bodily harm, unlawful confinement and extortion.

He is scheduled to appear in court in Cochrane on Nov. 26.
