Former US President Donald Trump was rushed off the stage during his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Sunday after an attempt on his life.
Mr. Trump was reportedly rushed off stage and swamped by security Secret Service agents after a bullet pierced the “upper part” of his right ear. He was taken for medical treatment and discharged.
Reports state that one spectator at the rally was shot dead, while two others were critically injured. The attacker was shot dead by the Secret Service.
The shooting has been condemned by world leaders, including his main opponent President Joe Biden. Reacting to the news, President Biden said “There is no place in America for this kind of violence. Everybody must condemn it.”
He also said he had been briefed on the shooting and he is grateful that Trump is safe. “I am praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information.”
“Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety.”
In a post on X, Ex-President Barrack Obama also condemned the assassination attempt. He said “there is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy. Although we don’t yet know exactly what happened, we should all be relieved that former President Trump wasn’t seriously hurt, and use this moment to recommit ourselves to civility and respect in our politics. Michelle and I are wishing him a quick recovery.”
Vice President Kamala Harris said she had been briefed about the shooting and is relieved that Trump is not seriously injured. “Doug and I are relieved that he is not seriously injured. We are praying for him, his family, and all those who have been injured and impacted by this senseless shooting.”
“We are grateful to the United States Secret Service, first responders, and local authorities for their immediate action. Violence such as this has no place in our nation. We must all condemn this abhorrent act and do our part to ensure that it does not lead to more violence.”
In the same vein, Kremlin issued a strong condemnation of the shooting, saying it did not believe the current U.S. administration was responsible but it had created an atmosphere that provoked the attack.
“We do not believe that the attempt to eliminate and assassinate Trump was organized by the current authorities” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. “But the atmosphere around candidate Trump… provoked what America is confronting today.
“After numerous attempts to remove candidate Trump from the political arena-using first legal tools, the courts, prosecutions, attempts to politically discredit and compromise the candidate – it was obvious to all outside observers that his life was in danger.”
Peskov said President Putin does not plan to call Trump after the incident.
