Calgary police has issued a public warning about a rise in debit scams targeting people in the downtown area.

According to a news release on Friday afternoon, police say there have been five reported cases where victims have discovered unauthorized withdrawals from their bank accounts after using their debit cards.

“In the reported incidents, young male suspects approach potential victims and request the victim to help pay for a small cab fare, as the driver of the cab does not accept cash”, said the statement.

“The victims have then provided their debit card to the driver to pay on a point-of-sale machine in the car. Later, the victims would discover the card they were given back was not their card and that unauthorized withdrawals were made from their bank account.”

Police believe the can wasn’t legitimate one.

People are advised to be skeptical and ask questions. Also, police advise that people should not give out personal or financial information, never let your debit or credit card be out of view when paying and always keep your card in your possession.

“Keep your distance and be suspicious of a person staying overly close to a cardholder”, said the police.

If you believe you have been a victim of a scam, police are asking you to call 403-266-1234.
