Banff National Park has issued a cougar warning for the Tunnel Mountain Campgrounds and surrounding area on Wednesday.
The Park recommends special caution when traveling as the cougar is reportedly frequenting the area. The warning is issued for all trails, facilities, and campgrounds withing the Tunnel Mountain Area and along the Tunnel Mountain Bench, which are next to to the Banff townsite.
The Park advises visitors to travel in groups and keep together to avoid encounter with a cougar. Officials advise that travelers should be cautious when traveling during dawn and dusk. Travel slowly if you are cycling or jogging, be aware of your surroundings, and do not wear earbuds.
Also, make noise to alert a cougar or other wildlife to your presence, says the Park. Carry bear spray in an easily accessible location and know how to use it, keep your dog on a leash at all times and walk your dog during daylight hours if possible.
Leave the area if you see or smell a dead animal and never approach, entice or feed wildlife, added Banff National Park.
If you see a cougar, officials advise that you do not approach the animal, or face it and retreat slowly (do not run or play dead). Immediately pick up children and be aggressive to deter an attack.
