Thuso Nokwanda Mbedu @thuso.mbedu is a South African actress. She gained international recognition for her performance as Winnie in the television series “Is’Thunzi,” which earned her a consecutive nomination for an International Emmy in 2017 and 2018. Mbedu was born on July 8, 1991, in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.
Mbedu’s talent and dedication to her craft have brought her success both in South Africa and abroad. In 2018, she was selected for the prestigious International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Next Gen program, which recognizes emerging talent in the television industry.
One of Thuso Mbedu’s most notable roles is the lead character Cora Randall in the TV adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s novel “The Underground Railroad.” The series, directed by Barry Jenkins, premiered on Amazon Prime Video in May 2021. Mbedu’s performance made her the first South African actress to lead an American television series.
She received widespread acclaim, further establishing her as a talented actress on the international stage. In 2022, she made her feature film debut in the American historical epic The Woman King as Nawi.
