United States President Joe Biden has officially announced his campaign for re-election in 2024. Biden made the announcement in a video on Tuesday, the fourth anniversary of the beginning of his first presidential bid.
“When I ran for president four years ago, I said we are in a battle for the soul of America – and we still are”, said President Biden in the three-minute video. He said “the question we are facing is whether in the years ahead we have more freedom or less freedom, more rights or fewer.”
Vice-President Kamala Harris will once again be his running mate.
Currently, President Biden is the oldest president in the US history and may be faced with questions about his age throughout the campaign. If elected, Biden who is currently 80, will be 86 by the end of his second full term in 2029.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump is the frontrunner for Republicans for the 2024 Presidential election. Both Trump and Biden ran for the 2020 election and this could mean a potential rematch between the two.
According to BBC, within hours of announcing his candidacy, President Biden addressed Union Workers in Washington, DC where he was greeted with cheers of “Let’s go, Joe” and “four more years!”
“I’m running for reelection to do more than turn back the tide of MAGA extremism. I want to make our economy work for families like yours: the hardworking folks who are the backbone of this country’, said President Biden.
