The fennec fox is a small crepuscular mammal native to the North African deserts. An adult Fennec Fox measures 20cm in height and they are omnivorous. The Fox is the smallest of all foxes, but what makes it more unique is its large ears measuring 6 inches. The ears of the fennec fox is used to disperse heat and listen for underground prey.

The coat, ears, and kidney of the fennec fox makes it easy for them adapt to the desert environment while surviving on high temperatures and little water. Due to the omnivorous nature of the fox, they feed on insects, small rodents, lizards, fruits and small birds. They rely on moisture gotten from their prey, but also drink water when available.

A female fennec fox breeds only once a year, and they usually mate up to 2 hours, 45 minutes. Gestation lasts up 50 to 52 days, sometimes 63 days. The male fennec fox provides food for the female during pregnancy. Meanwhile, both male and female take care of the pups.

Amazingly, the fennec fox can be kept as pets and they behave like cute little puppies. They may live for about 11 years in human care.  It is almost tempting to want them as pet right? It is important to note however, that they are naturally wild animals with wild instincts.
