Affenpinschers, also known as the Monkey Terrier are small dogs with a sturdy build. They have a round skull, short muzzle, and prominent lower jaw, giving them a distinct “monkey-like” facial expression. Their coat is dense and rough, usually black or gray in color, but other colors are also accepted.

On average, Affenpinschers stand about 9 to 11.5 inches (23 to 29 cm) tall at the shoulder and weigh between 6 to 13 pounds (3 to 6 kg). Despite their small size, Affenpinschers are confident, curious, and quite spirited. They are known for their lively and entertaining personality. They are often described as “big dogs in small bodies” due to their confident demeanor.

Affenpinschers are intelligent dogs that can learn quickly, but they can also be a bit stubborn at times. Positive reinforcement-based training methods work well with them. These dogs are moderately active. They enjoy playtime and short walks, but they’re not extremely high-energy dogs. They can adapt to apartment living as long as they receive regular exercise.

Most importantly, Affenpinschers need socialization from an early age. This helps them develop good manners around other dogs, pets, and people.

Their wiry coat requires regular brushing to prevent matting. Some owners choose to have their coats professionally groomed or hand-stripped. Regular grooming also helps maintain their distinctive appearance.

Like all breeds, Affenpinschers can be prone to certain health issues. These might include dental problems due to their small mouths, as well as respiratory issues that can affect some brachycephalic breeds (short-nosed breeds). The average lifespan of an Affenpinscher is around 12 to 14 years, but with proper care, they can live longer.

Generally, Affenpinschers are loyal and affectionate with their families. They make good companions for individuals, couples, or families with older children. They can also get along with other pets if properly socialized.
