The okapi (Okapia johnstoni) is a unique and relatively rare animal that is native to the dense rainforests of Central Africa, primarily found in the Democratic Republic of Congo. They are also referred to as the forest giraffe, Congolese giraffe and Zebra giraffe.

Okapis are approximately 5.6 to 6.6 feet (1.7 to 2 meters) tall at the shoulder. They weigh between 440 to 770 pounds (200 to 350 kilograms).

The most distinctive feature of the okapi is its long, prehensile tongue, which allows them to grasp and strip leaves from trees and shrubs. Okapis are primarily found in the dense, remote rainforests of the Ituri Forest in the Democratic Republic of Congo. They inhabit areas with thick vegetation and prefer to stay near rivers and streams.

Naturally, Okapis are solitary and primarily crepuscular, which means they are most active during dawn and dusk. They are known to be very secretive and elusive, making them challenging to study in the wild.

Their distinct coat pattern with zebra-like stripes on their legs helps them blend into the dappled sunlight of the forest, providing them with natural camouflage. They are more closely related to giraffes than any other living species.

However, Okapis are the only living member of the Okapia genus and Giraffidae family. They are known to produce various vocalizations, including a series of coughs, whistles, and chuffing sounds to communicate with one another.

Female okapis give birth to a single calf after a gestation period of around 440 to 450 days. Calves can stand and walk within 30 minutes of birth. Okapis are herbivores and primarily feed on a variety of plants, including leaves, fruits, and fungi. Their diet is selective, and they have a preference for certain plant species.

In the wild, okapis have a lifespan of around 15-20 years, while they can live longer in captivity. These fascinating creatures are a testament to the incredible biodiversity found in the rainforests of Central Africa and the importance of their conservation.
