Indian Music legend Zakir Hussain, considered one of the world’s greatest tabla players has died at 73.
The musical icon died of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a lung disease, at a hospital in San Francisco, his family said.
“He leaves behind an extraordinary legacy cherished by countless music lovers around the globe, with an influence that will resonate for generations to come. His prolific work as a teacher, mentor and educator has left an indelible mark on countless musicians”, reads a statement a family statement.
“He hoped to inspire the next generation to go further. He leaves behind an unparalleled legacy as a cultural ambassador and one of the greatest musicians of all time. The family requests privacy at this time.”
Hussain had a career that spanned six decades and saw him collaborate with the likes of George Harrison, Van Morrison Mickey Hart and Charles Lloyd. He won four Grammy awards and has received the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award.
In 2024, he became the first musician from India to win three Grammy awards in the same year. He won the first one in 2009. Hussain’s Indian Jazz fusion band “Shakti” won best global music album.
Following his death, tributes have poured in for the legend. Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar said “we were fortunate to witness your magic” and “the beats will continue to echo in our hearts forever.”
Prime Minister of India, Narenda Modi wrote on X, “Deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary tabla maestro, Ustad Zakir Hussain Ji. He will be remembered as a true genius who revolutionized the world of Indian classical music.”
“He also brought the tabla to the global stage, captivating millions with his unparalleled rhythm. Through this, he seamlessly blended Indian classical traditions with global music, thus becoming an icon of cultural unity.”
Modi added, “His iconic performance and soulful compositions will contribute to inspire generations of musicians and music lovers alike. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and the global music community.”
Hussain is survived by his wife and two daughters as well as his sister and two brothers.
