Residents of Jasper, Alta. will learn when they can return to their homes on Monday, according to Mayor Richard Ireland.
“While work in reconnecting essential services to gas, water and electricity progresses, restoration of residential services could take up to three weeks or more depending on the area. Residents should be prepared to be as self-sufficient as possible, given retail and fuel services could be limited”, said Municipality of Jasper.
In a media conference on Saturday morning, Ireland said dates and details will be shared on Monday, August 12, 2024 by the unified command of Parks Canada and Municipality of Jasper. However, this does not mean re-entry will occur on Monday.
“We are making progress on re-entry work everyday due to the ongoing dedication of various crews”, said Municipality of Jasper.
“My hope is that knowledge of the pending announcement will provide a bridge and some measure of comfort to those so fraught with anxiety and the desire to know when they will be able to return home. Monday, they will know”, said Ireland during the press conference.
Officials are reportedly actively developing plans and guides for the stages of re-entry. Over 40 sub-plans are informing the formal re-entry plan, according to the Municipality of Jasper website.
Meanwhile, the wildfire remains classified out of control, and stands approximately 33, 000 according to a Jasper National Park update. The northwest side of the fire is 89% contained and crews continue to focus on this area to gain control and secure the perimeter.
