That said, here is a simple step-by-step guide on how to make homemade butter:

All you need is Heavy Cream and Salt (Optional).

Equipment:

Get a jar or a mixer (Stand or Hand mixer).

Cheesecloth or a fine strainer (if using a jar).

Bowl for buttermilk.

Instructions:

If you will be using a jar, fill it about halfway with heavy cream. If you will be using a mixer, pour the cream into the mixing bowl. Next, you either shake in a jar or whip in your mixer. Shake the jar vigorously for about 10-15 minutes, until it stops sloshing and eventually form clumps.

For mixer, beat the cream on medium high-speed. After a few minutes, it turns to whipped cream and then it will start to separate into butter and buttermilk.

Once you see clumps of butter, stop mixing and separate the buttermilk from butter. Rinse the butter under cold water to remove excess buttermilk. This helps preserve it longer. Knead it gently under cold water until the water runs clear. If you like, mix in salt to taste.

Transfer the butter to an airtight container and refrigerate. You can also freeze your butter for longer storage.
