A Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer has been shot dead and two others left seriously injured, while executing a search warrant in Coquitlam, about 30 kilometers east of Vancouver, on Friday morning.
According to the RCMP, on September 22, 2023, Ridge Meadows RCMP were executing a search warrant on a residence near the intersection of Pine Tree Way and Glen Drive in Coquitlam, B.C.
During the search, the officers reportedly became engaged in an altercation with a man which resulted officers being injured and the man being shot. RCMP Const. Rick O’Brien, 51, died and the suspect as well as two other officers were taken to hospital with serious injuries, said the police.
The report says the Emergency Health Services transported all injured persons to the hospital. However, O’Brien succumbed to his injuries. One of the officers and the suspect remain in stable condition in the hospital, while the other officer was treated of minor injuries and released.
When speaking at a news conference, Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald, the Commanding Officer of the B.C RCMP said O’Brien had just recently celebrated seven years of service. He was survived by a wife and children.
“Const. O’Brien led by example”, said McDonald. “He had a great sense of humor, he was well respected by his peers, and he was loved in his community.”
“The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has been deployed and will assume conduct of the investigation into the officer’s death and the injuries to the other officers”, said RCMP.
Meanwhile, the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia will simultaneously investigate the actions of police.
