The city of Calgary has offered to help people who have been displaces from their homes. The city has reportedly deployed 12 members from its Canada Task Force 2, to Parkland County and the High Level area to help with the situation.
A provincial state of emergency was declared on Saturday. The wildfire has led to over 30,000 people displaced from their homes, throughout central and northern Alberta.
The city announced on Twitter that they are “working with the province and expect to open a reception centre for evacuees in Calgary tomorrow (Monday, May 8). Once timing and details are confirmed we will share more information.”
Also, the Animal Food Bank Foundation in Medicine Hat is sending supplies for pets of wildfire evacuees, including food, medication, leashes, toys and other essentials, reports CTV News.
Alberta firefighters hope that the change in weather conditions will be most beneficial. “When we see that lifting in conditions, it means that our firefighters can actually get a little closer to areas of the fire that they had not been able to get into before and that can be very big for us”, said Christie Tucker, information unit manager with Alberta Wildfire.
