The City of Calgary says it has opened a reception centre to “provide assistance” to evacuees of the Jasper Wildfire. The city says it is also providing accommodations for evacuees and their pets.

The reception centre is located at the Shouldice Arena 1515 Home Road NW. The centre remained open on Tuesday from 11am to 11pm. Hours for Wednesday will be provided on the City of Calgary website when they are available.

The support available for evacuees include accommodations, pet support, RV sites, washrooms, temporary parking, health resources, clothing and personal hygiene items. According to the city, there will be someone waiting to welcome new arrivals and assess the help they might need.

“Our doors are open to support those that have been displaced by this emergency in what I’m sure is a very difficult time”, said Chief Sue Henry of the Calgary Emergency Management Agency in the news release.

“Our hearts are with those impacted, as well as all first responders who stayed behind to manage the emergency. We are all neighbors. We will make individuals feel as welcome as possible while they are here”, added Chief Sue.

Meanwhile, the city says it cannot accept donations at the moment and donations should not be brough to the reception centre. Calgarians who want to donate are urged to check the province’s website for recommended organizations or find a local campaign that they would like to support.
