The government of Canada has announces an end to the Student Direct Stream and the Nigerian Student Express (NSE) as part of its initiative to “give students a positive academic experience.”

On Friday, Nov. 8, 2024, the Canadian government said the SDS which was launched in 2018 provide faster processing for eligible post-secondary students ended as of 2:00 p.m. ET.

Similarly, the NSE, which was introduced for Nigerian students ended at the same time.

“Canada’s goal is to strengthen program integrity, address student vulnerability, and give all students equal and fair access to the application process, as well as a positive academic experience. To meet this commitment, the Student Direct Stream (SDS) and Nigerian Student Express (NSE) initiatives have ended as of 2:00 p.m. ET today”, says IRCC.

Consequently, prospective students will have to use the regular study permit stream, which accepts Guaranteed Investment Certificates as proof of financial support.

All SDS and NSE applications that were received before 2pm on Friday, Nov. 8 will be processed under the streams. However, study permit applications that will be submitted after will be processed under the regular stream.

IRCC says the change does not affect eligibility for those who wish to apply for a study permit from a country where the SDS or NSE initiatives have been offered.

“All students, regardless of whether they were eligible for the SDS or NSE, are required to meet Canada’s study permit application requirements.”
