Calgary Moves to Stage 1 Outdoor Water Restrictions

The City of Calgary has moved to stage 1 outdoor water restrictions on Tuesday, allowing for additional sprinkler use.

On July 18, the city moved to stage 2 water restrictions after increasing the flow of water in the feeder main. “The pipe continues to perform well, and after completing some required maintenance at the Bearspaw and Glenmore Water Treatment Plants on Monday, we are now able to move to stage 1”, said the City in its Tuesday News Release.

Under the Stage 1 water restrictions, Calgarians can now use a sprinkler, soaker hose or in-ground sprinkling system for a maximum of two hours per week on set days. “Even-numbered addresses may water on Wednesday or Saturday. Odd-numbered addresses may water on Thursday or Sunday. Calgarians are asked to water in the morning or in the evening to avoid the hottest period of the day and minimize evaporation.”

Also, you can now water gardens, plants and shrubs by a hose attached to a trigger spray nozzle/watering wand or drip irrigation with an automatic shut-off is allowed on any day/time. The city also encouraged people to water their plants slowly and at its base, and check soil moisture both before and after watering to determine if water is needed.

However, there are still some restrictions under Stage 1. Calgarians are not allowed to wash driveways, sidewalks, windows or exterior building surfaces. No filling of fountains and decorative water features, unless it is a bird bath. No washing of vehicles in driveway or on the street.

The city says it plans to turn on additional pump at the Bearspaw Water Treatment Plant on Wednesday. Officials will continue to monitor the system for a few days, to determine whether restrictions can be lifted further.
