A week after hockey star Johnny Gaudreau, 31, and his brother Matthew Gaudreau, 29, was killed, the Calgary Flames host a candlelight vigil in their honor.
Hundreds of people were gathered at the Scotiabank Saddledome to honor the memory of the brothers. The mourners, who were mostly wearing Johnny’s signature number 13 jersey, took 13 minutes of silence for the brothers.
The brothers were fatally injured in a collision while biking in New Jersey last week Thursday. The collision occurred a night before the brothers were to be groomsmen at their sister Katie’s wedding.
The candle light marked the beginning of a 13-day observance for fans to continue to pay their respect and visit the memorial. Another vigil was also held in Columbus, Ohio by the Blue Jackets. There, the vigil was held for 13 minutes and 21 seconds.
Johnny wore the No. 13 with the Blue Jackets, the Flames and during his time in Boston College. Matthew wore the No. 21 at Boston College.
“Johnny was a great teammate and fried”, said Calgary captain Mikael Backlund. “I feel lucky I got to see him firsthand, growing up from a college boy into a man. I remember sitting injured on my couch in my apartment in Calgary watching Johnny Hockey’s first NHL game. Of course, he scored a goal right away.”
