The Governor of Ondo State, Akeredolu Rotimi is dead, aged 67.

Mr. Akeredolu reportedly died at about 2am on Wednesday at a German hospital where he was receiving treatment for Leukemia and prostate cancer.

Akeredolu who is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), and former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), was reelected as the Ondo state governor in October 2020 and was sworn in for a second term in February 2021. He served as the Governor of Ondo State from 24 February 2017 until December 27, 2023.

On September 7, the hailing governor had returned from a three-month medical leave in Germany and returned to Ibadan, Oyo State. After returning from his medical leave, the governor attempted to govern from Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, which sparked public outrage.

He went on another medical leave, on December 13, after transferring power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa on the directive of President Bola Tinubu.

“In the absence of Governor Akeredolu, the Deputy Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, will assume the responsibilities of the Governor in acting capacity” the governor’s chief press secretary, Richard Olatunde had said in a statement.
