The barreleye fish, scientifically known as Macropinna microstoma, is a remarkable deep-sea dweller found in the dark waters of the mesopelagic and bathypelagic zones (deep ocean waters).
One of the most distinctive features of the barreleye fish is its transparent, fluid-filled dome-shaped head. This transparent casing covers the fish’s eyes and provides protection while allowing for excellent visibility.
The barreleye’s eyes are quite extraordinary. They are large, tubular structures that are pointed upwards and forward. This positioning enables the fish to see both potential prey and predators above it. These eyes can rotate within their sockets to adjust their field of vision.
Living in the deep-sea regions where sunlight barely penetrates, the barreleye fish has evolved to detect bioluminescent light produced by other organisms. Its highly sensitive eyes aid in capturing even the tiniest traces of light to spot prey or potential mates.
The barreleye fish’s ability to detect bioluminescent light sources is particularly useful for spotting potential prey. Some jellyfish that it preys upon are known to emit bioluminescent flashes, making them easier to locate in the dark environment.
Typically, the barreleye fish feeds on zooplankton and small jellyfish. Its upward-facing eyes help it locate prey silhouetted against the faint light filtering down from the surface.
Due to the depths at which they reside, barreleye fish are generally slow-moving creatures. They rely on currents to move around and conserve energy.
Despite their intriguing characteristics, barreleye fish are rarely encountered and difficult to study due to their habitat’s extreme conditions. Much of what is known about them comes from specimens collected in deep-sea trawls or observed in controlled environments like research vessels or aquariums.
