Alberta’s government has tabled a new bill that is aimed towards strengthening the province’s child care safety. The proposed bill is reportedly set to “increase accountability and transparency, address workforce challenges and enhance health, safety and quality in child care.”

The Early Learning and Child Care Amendment Act, 2024 – Bill 25 – was tabled on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2024.

According to Alberta’s government, proposed changes to the bill would “help the government ensure child safety by strengthening its ability to hold non-compliant providers accountable, speeding up its ability to address issues in care and upholding public trust in the child-care system.”

Alberta Minister of Jobs, Economy and Trade Matt Jones says the legislative amendments would strengthen the tools available to enforce quality care and give parents peace of mind that their government has their back.

Amendments to the bill would allow the government to impose penalties of license holders and educators who jeopardize child safety and who do not meet quality standards. It would also allow parents to have easy access to vital information about their children’s care.

“In addition to the non-compliances that are already posted online, these changes would put more information at the fingertips of parents, including the certification status of early childhood educators and stop orders against unlicensed providers”, says Government of Alberta.

Also, the amendments would improve the government’s ability to “target specific issues at a child-care facility while allowing for the temporary closure of only part of a child-care program, rather than closing the entire program. This would help minimize impacts to parents and children.”
