The Alberta government has shut down the controversial Canadian Energy Centre also known as the “Energy War Room.”

In a statement on Tuesday from the office of the energy minister, it was confirmed that the war room will be integrated into the province’s intergovernmental relations department.

“The Canadian Energy Centre (CEC) is an important advocate for Canada and Alberta’s long-term position as a safe, clean and responsible energy supplier and will continue to increase the public’s understanding of the role oil and gas plays globally in a secure energy future”, read the statement.

“After careful consideration, we will be integrating the mandate of the CEC into the Intergovernmental Relations (IGR). Resources such as CEC assets, intellectual property and researchers will now be supporting IGR in order to seamlessly continue this important work.”

The CEC was originally set up by the United Conservative Party (UCP) to fight misinformation about the oil and gas industry. It was established by the Jason Kennedy government in 2019.

Reacting to the news of the closure, Alberta’s New Democratic Party (NDP) leadership candidate Kathleen Ganley wrote on X, “5 years, and the Energy War Room’s credits include – popularizing a children’s movie about big foot, stealing a logo, impersonating journalists, evading freedom of information and accountability, and doing NOTHING to further Alberta’s interests.”

“Good riddance to bad rubbish”, Ganley added.
