Alberta Sheriffs have shut down a property in Southeast Calgary due to alleged drug activity and violence in the area. The Sheriffs shut down the home, located at 3232 Rae Cres. S.E., on Tuesday.

According to a Facebook post by Alberta Sheriffs, the home was shut down by “investigators from our Safer Communities and Neighborhoods (SCAN) Unit.”

“The Safer Communities and Neighborhoods (SCAN) unit of the Alberta Sheriffs obtained a court order against the owner of 3232 Rae Crescent SE that gives investigators the authority to close the property for 90 days, starting at noon on Oct. 17, said a release by the Alberta Sheriffs.

The SCAN unit reportedly began their investigation in January, in response to multiple complaints from the community. The release says the Calgary Police visited the property between January 2022 and May 2023, in response to calls about drug trafficking, disturbances, violence and threats.

Firefighters and paramedics responded to overdoses at the property in March and May 2023. “Investigators were able to substantiate complaints about drug activity, observing suspected drug transactions and a high number of people coming and going from the property”, said the release.

In May, officers from SCAN served the property owner with a warning letter. Afterwards, when the letter failed to result any improvements, SCAN investigators and Alberta Justice lawyer obtained a community safety order in Court of King’s Bench on Oct. 3.

The Alberta Sheriffs says in addition to the 90-day closure, which ends on Jan. 15, 2024, the community safety order authorizes investigators to monitor the property for three years, expiring on Oct 3. 2026.

A fence has been erected around the property and the house has been boarded up. Also, locks to the home will be changed to prevent “any unauthorized entry during the 90-day closure.”
