Alberta Health Services (AHS) has introduced a new directive called “enhanced masking directive”, aimed at preventing the spread of covid-19.

The new directive will go into effect on Thursday at Alberta Health Services acute-care facilities, reports CTV News. The rule will allow health zone leaders to require staff, doctors, visitors and other health workers to wear masks in hospitals.

If the measure is implemented by leadership, masking would be required for patients, and designated support people at the acute-care facilities. A news release by AHS also added that “no patients shall be denied services.”

If the directive is implemented, masking would be required on hospital sites including patient-care areas, elevators, staircases, hallways, common areas, cafeterias, and gift shops. The AHS says the decision to require enhanced masking will be “based on several factors including rates of hospitalizations, number of outbreaks, hospital occupancy and test positivity.”

If a facility requires masking, the signs indicating such will be posted by AHS. The health agency says masking will be optional for staff in areas where they do not have contact with patients.
