The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recalled SunFed cucumbers that were sold in the U.S. and Canada between Oct. 12 and Nov. 26.

According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), “Whole Fresh American Cucumbers packaged in bulk cardboard containers labeled with the “SunFed” label or in a white box or black plastic crate with a sticker that provides the implicated grower’s name, ‘Agrotato, S.A. de C.V”, is being recalled.

The recall is due to a Salmonella contamination.

The FDA says the cucumbers were sold by SunFed and other importers and shipped to customers located in the states of Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, & Wisconsin.

The products were also sold to the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Calgary, Saskatchewan, and Ontario.

“The cucumbers would have reached customers through foodservice and retail outlets that may be located in states other than those listed above”, said the FDA.

The recall occured when the FDA informed SunFed that the cucumbers were associated with reported salmonellosis illnesses between October 12 to November 15, 2024. SunFed has reportedly contacted all its buyers to advise them of the recall.

The FDA has advised consumers to check if they have the recalled product. Also, anyone with the recalled product is advised against selling, using, serving, consuming or distributing it.

Customers who are unsure if they have purchased the recalled product are advised to contact their retailer.

On Friday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that there are 68 confirmed cases of the outbreak in 19 states. Out of the 68, 18 have been hospitalized and there have been zero deaths.

Meanwhile, the CFIA says it is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to issuance of a Food Recall Warning, when required, for these products in Canada.
