12-Year-Old Nigerian Girl Invents Air Filter, Gets $11.5m Funding

Eniola Shokunbi, a 12-year-old Nigeria from Connecticut, USA, has invented a air filter to reduce spread of air borne diseases in US schools.

The Connecticut State Bond Commission approved $11.5 million in funding for the design, which targets creating low-cost air filters for classrooms.

Eniola’s invention came about when her fifth grade class was tasked with creating a solution to enhance safety in schools during potential future pandemics. Hence, she created a simple, low-cost but effective air filter system.

The design was constructed using a combination of components such as box fan, four furnace filters, duct tape and cardboard. The assembly resulted in a low production cost of around $60 per unit, making it a highly affordable alternative to commercial air purifiers.

Eniola said, “the air goes through all the sides, and it comes out of the top. So it filters in and out.”
The design underwent rigorous testing with the help of the scientists at the University of Connecticut. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also confirmed that the device eliminates over 99% or airborne viruses.

Connecticut State Senator, Matt Lesser, commended Eniola’s invention. Lesser said, “Eniola is fabulous. She wows every room she’s in front of. She’s a real rock star.”
