The Alberta government has reportedly extended a one-time payment of $2,000 for each child affected by an E.coli outbreak in Calgary to 19 daycares.

Albert Children and Family Services posted a link to an online application form on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, on Monday.

“Eligible families affected by a full or partial child care closure or an exclusion order due to the E. coli outbreak, declared by AHS on Sept 4, can now apply for the one-time compassionate payment”, said the Monday post.

The organization added a link that directed to a website with tabs to apply for the program and a link to 11 daycares affected by the outbreak as well as eight others that have since had partial or full closure due to secondary transmission.

The compassionate payment, according to the website, is “made on compassionate grounds for the purpose of alleviating hardship to families who were impacted by the closure of their child care provider following the E.coli outbreak declared by Alberta Health Service (AHS) on September 4, 2023 in Calgary, Alberta.”

The website states that the “payment is not intended to compensate for any losses experienced by the recipients, and applicants are not required to waive any legal rights to be eligible to receive the payment.”

The Canadian Press reports that “as of Thursday, when the province last provided an update, there were six children still receiving care at the Alberta Children’s Hospital and two remained on dialysis.”

The report says there were 346 lab-confirmed cases of the infection and a total of 29 secondary cases.
