Screenwriters in the US say they have reached an agreement with studio bosses that could see an end to what would have been the longest strike to affect Hollywood in decades.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA), announced the deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).

“We have reached a tentative agreement on a new 2023 (minimum basic agreement), which is to say an agreement in principle on all deal points, subject to drafting final contract language”, said a statement from the Writers Guild of America.

“We can say, with great pride, that this deal is exceptional – with meaningful gains and protections for writers in every sector of the membership.”

The strike which began on May 2, has shut down many of America’s top shows, and several daytime and late-night talk shows, including Stranger Things. The strike was started over demands for better pay for writers, greater rewards for creating hit shows and protection from Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Picket lines have been manned for months outside offices including Netflix and Disney. The strike involved around 11, 500 members of the Writers Guild. SAG-AFTRA actors’ union also started their own walkout in in July, which is yet to be resolved.

SAG-AFTRA congratulated the writers on the resolution of the strike. “SAG-AFTRA congratulates the WGA on reaching a tentative agreement with the AMPTP after 146 days of incredible strength, resiliency and solidarity on the picket lines.”

“While we look forward to reviewing the WGA and AMPTP’s tentative agreement, we remain committed to achieving the necessary terms for our members. We remain on strike in our TV/Theatrical contract and continue to urge the studio and streamer CEOs and the AMPTP to return to the table and make the fair deal that our members deserve and demand.”
