Singapore has toppled Japan as the country with the most powerful passport. The country’s passport is ranked first among 199 countries in the world, overtaking Japan which has been in the position for five consecutive years.
The global passport ranking for 2023 was conducted based on “exclusive data” provided by the International Air Transport Authority (IATA). Ranking is done based on the number of destinations holders of the country’s passport can access without having to apply for visa.
The Henley Passport Index, compares the visa-free access of 199 different passports to 227 travel destinations. They also consider the visa-on-arrival access of each country.
Singapore citizens are able to visit 192 destinations visa-free out of the 227 in the world. However, Germany, Italy and Spain tied in the second place, with their passport holders having access to 190 destinations.
Japan is knocked to third place, alongside Austria, Finland, France, Luxembourg, South Korea and Sweden, with their passport holders having access to 189 destinations. Canada is placed in seventh position alongside Greece with 185 travel destinations.
Meanwhile, Nigeria is ranked 90th, sharing the rank with South Sudan, with citizens having access visa-free access to 46 travel destinations. Afghanistan could be considered the worst passport to hold with only a visa-free access to 27 destinations.
