Vinegar can be used to disinfect your kitchen counter, sink or any other spot in your home that you want to keep food safe. When diluted with water, vinegar is a “magic cleaner”, which is a natural disinfectant for killing common germs. You can clean places like kitchen, floors, stovetops, pots and pans with vinegar.

However, avoid using vinegar on certain surfaces like marble, granite, and hardwood floors, as it can cause damage. Most importantly, always read and follow any specific instructions or recommendations provided by the manufacturer of the item you’re cleaning.

To use vinegar in cleaning, you must first gather supplies which includes white vinegar, water, a spray bottle, a microfiber cloth or sponge, and any additional tools or materials specific to the cleaning task. Then you can begin cleaning.

Dilute the vinegar: Vinegar is highly acidic, so it’s important to dilute it with water before using it for cleaning. A common ratio is one part vinegar to one part water. For tougher stains or buildup, you can increase the vinegar concentration, but always test it on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure it won’t damage the surface.

Prepare the spray bottle: Proceed to fill a clean spray bottle with the diluted vinegar solution.

Spot test: Before applying vinegar to a large area, it’s advisable to perform a spot test on a small, discreet area to ensure compatibility and avoid any potential damage or discoloration.

Apply the vinegar solution: Spray the diluted vinegar onto the surface or item you want to clean. Allow it to sit for a few minutes to help break down dirt, grime, or stains. For tougher stains or buildup, you can scrub the area gently with a microfiber cloth or sponge.

Rinse or wipe clean: After the vinegar has had time to work, wipe the surface with a clean, damp cloth to remove the vinegar residue and any loosened dirt. In some cases, rinsing with water may be necessary, such as when cleaning windows or countertops.

Dry the area: Use a dry cloth or towel to dry the cleaned surface thoroughly. This helps prevent water spots and streaks.

Additional tips:

For removing tough odors, such as from a cutting board or microwave, you can apply undiluted vinegar and allow it to sit for a longer period before wiping clean.

To clean and deodorize your dishwasher or washing machine, pour a cup of vinegar into the empty machine and run a cycle without any dishes or clothes.

You can also use vinegar as a fabric softener by adding half a cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle of your laundry load.
