On this day, 1974, The Heimlich maneuver, a life-saving technique for choking victims, is first published in the journal Emergency Medicine. Also known as abdominal thrusts, the Heimlich maneuver is done by applying pressure to the abdomen to expel an obstructing object from the airway.
It was developed by Dr. Henry Heimlich, an American thoracic surgeon. Dr. Heimlich’s findings and technique were published in an article titled “Pop Goes the Café Coronary” in the journal of Emergency Medicine. This publication drew significant attention to the maneuver and has since become a widely recognized method for clearing a blocked airway.
