Chinese water dragon is a lizard native to China and Southeast Asia. They are also known as Indochinese water dragon, Asian water dragon, Thai water dragon or green water dragon. They are usually large and robust lizards with a fringe of enlarged scales running down the length of the spine. They have been known to be kept as pets because of their exotic appearance and interactive behavior.

Caring for a Chinese water dragon requires attention to their specific habitat, diet, and overall health. Here are some tips on how to properly care for your pet Chinese water dragon:

Enclosure and Habitat: Chinese water dragons are very energetic pets and they require a lot of space. Provide a tall and spacious enclosure, at least 55-75 gallons for juveniles, and 4 to 6 feet tall for adults. They love to climb. The temperature in the tank should be regulated according to the time of day. Ensure that there is 10 -12 hours of light a day to help with calcium absorption.

Also, provide a large water dish for soaking and swimming. Keep the water clean and change it from time to time to avoid bacteria buildup.

Diet: Chinese water dragons primarily feed on insects, vegetables and fruits. Provide a balanced diet of crickets, mealworms, waxworms, leafy greens, carrots, and small amounts of fruits like berries. Feed the juveniles daily and adults 3-4 times a week.

Handling: Chinese water dragons can be nervous at first, so handle them gently and regularly to build trust. Avoid handling them too much until they’re comfortable, as stress can affect their health.

Health and Maintenance: Ensure that the humidity is high enough for them to shed properly. Mist them lightly during shedding periods. Constantly monitor your pet Chinese water dragon for signs of illness like lethargy, loss of appetite, swelling, or changes in color. These could indicate health problems such as respiratory infections or metabolic bone disease.
