The Limnically active lakes, called exploding lakes, are lakes that experience a rare type of natural disaster in which dissolved carbon dioxide suddenly erupts from deep lake waters, forming a gas cloud capable of suffocating wildlife, livestock, and humans.
Africa is home to three of such lakes which are Lake Nyos and Lake Monoun in Cameroon and Lake Kivu in Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo.
