The Alberta Health Services (AHS) has issued a boil water advisory for the town of Jasper as a precautionary measure following wildfire.

“This is a result of wildfire activity and depressurization impacting the water distribution system. AHS will be working with the Town of Jasper, Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (AEPA), and the system operator to ensure the issue is corrected and water is safe for consumption”, says AHS.

An evacuation order was issued for Jasper National Park and the Town of Jasper on Monday, July 22, 2024. Visitors and residents were asked to evacuate immediately.

However, AHS has issued the boil water advisory for when residents return to the area.

“Once residents of the area are allowed to re-enter the community, all residents and businesses are advised to bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute prior to any consumption, including: drinking, brushing teeth, cleaning raw foods, preparing infant formula or juices, making ice and so on,” says the advisory.

The health agency says residents do not need to boil water used for bathing or washing clothes. To wash hands, use soap and water, after drying your hands, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing more than 60% alcohol.

AHS says residents may also purchase bottled water for consumption, once re-entry is permitted. AHS Environmental Public Health officers will continue to monitor the situation, including sampling and testing of the drinking water to ensure it is safe for consumption, prior to lifting the advisory.
