China’s Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC), has unveiled the world’s first Ammonia powered car engine. The engine was unveiled as part of the Group’s annual technology showcase.
The engine, according to GAC, was developed by its research and development center, and is expected to be able to burn liquid ammonia more resourcefully and safely than previous attempts.
GAC says the newly developed engine has been able to overcome the challenges of toxicity and low flammability, saying the engine can achieve a 90% reduction in carbon emissions as opposed to conventional fuels.
“We’ve overcome the pain point of ammonia being difficult to burn quickly and put the fuel to use in the passenger car industry”, said Qi Hongzhong from GAC’s research and development centre while speaking to the press.
GAC said it has developed a 2.0l engine that can burn liquid ammonia more efficiently in a safe way, achieving 120KW of power.
