Practical steps for identifying, cleaning and preventing mold and mildew to ensure a healthier home environment.

Mold are microorganisms that are found everywhere, including the home. They can grow on almost anything that is moist enough. They may look like black stains or specks of white, black, orange, green, purple or brown. Exposure to molds can cause allergic reactions like sneezing, shortness of breath, skin rash and runny nose in some people.

However, Mildew is more visible than mold during the early stages. Mildew may appear as white or gray powdery dots. Both Mold and Mildew can cause health problems. Hence, it is essential to know how to effectively deal with mold and mildew in your home. Here are some tips to help you deal with mold and mildew:

Identify the Source: First, you must identify the source of the mildew and mold in your home. Check for leaks or damp areas in bathrooms, kitchens, basements and around windows. Identify where the leaks in these areas may be coming from and fix them quickly.

Clean up Mold and Mildew: Use a mixture of water and detergent to scrub off the mold and mildew. Alternatively, you can use a mixture of 1 cup of bleach in 1 gallon of water. Ensure the area is thoroughly dried off after cleaning to prevent reoccurrence.

Remove Severely Affected Materials: Some materials like rugs and carpets may be severely affected by mold. Remove and replace these affected materials. You may also seek professional help in cleaning up severely affected areas.

Control Moisture: Once you have identified a leak, fix them promptly and ensure proper drainage around the home. Use humidifiers in damp areas and ensure that the home is well-ventilated, especially in areas prone to moisture like bathrooms and kitchens.

Regular Maintenance: Regularly clean and inspect those areas that are prone to mold and mildew growth. Use mold-resistant products during renovations or repairs, such as mold-resistant drywall or paint. Avoid placing carpets in moist areas, instead opt for hard surfaces.
